Secretary-General of the International Maritime Organization (IMO), Kitack Lim, has indicated that Ghana has the potential to lead the development of the regional maritime business within the global setup.
Addressing students and leadership of the Regional Maritime University (RMU) as part of activities marking his visit to the country, he applauded various stakeholders within the country’s blue economy for positioning the industry on the sustainable path for growth.
Mr. Lim was also particularly impressed with efforts by the Regional Maritime University (RMU) to build a pool of competent human resource who play a critical role in the shipping and maritime business.
“The RMU has a clear plan and strategy to train cultured and skilled labour to sustain the advancement of the maritime industry,” he said.
The IMO boss called on the policymakers, specifically the sector ministry, to pay critical attention to the maritime sector to help bolster the economic gains of the buoyant blue economy.
He noted: “The transport ministry must strongly support activities of the maritime domain to enhance and sustain the progress of the industry.
He said the IMO, on its part, will continue to facilitate a level playing field for seafarers, especially in the areas of conditions of service and safety in its bid to secure the sustainability of the shipping and maritime business well into the future.
