The General Council of the World Trade Organisation (WTO) will hold a special meeting on 15 February in Geneva time to consider the appointment of its next Director-General.
The meeting will take place in virtual format.
Nigeria’s Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala is in pole position to become the first female and the seventh director-general of the global trade regulator following the withdrawal of Yoo Myung-hee of the Republic of Korea from the race.
The nomination period for the 2020 DG selection process ended on 8 July, with eight candidates nominated by their respective governments.
After three rounds of consultations, with the final round ending in October 28, Nigeria’s Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala and Yoo Myung-hee of the Republic of Korea were announced as the two favourites for the WTO top job.
The latter has however withdrawn from the race leaving Mrs. Okonjo-Iweala as the sole contestant to lead the global trade regulatory body.
