The Chief Executive Officer of the Ghana Shippers Authority (GSA), Ms. Benonita Bismarck, has cited the use of faulty and inaccurate axle weighing scales, non-adherence to protocols at weighing stations, and possible tampering with the axle weighing scales by personnel at axle stations as some barriers to the smooth enforcement of the axle load policy regime in the country.
The Axle Load Control Programme is a sub-regional intervention that is designed to ensure that all loaded trucks that ply the country’s roads are within the prescribed and permissible axle load, gross weight and dimension limits in accordance with the provisions in the Road Traffic Regulations, 2012 (L.I. 2180).
The programme seeks to ensure a good and safe road network for transit trade, improve travel time and reduce road maintenance cost.
“We must get a firm handle on the implementation of the axle load control programme in this country and save not only our roads but also facilitate a more efficient and effective transit trade value chain that will be the most competitive in the sub-region,” she told a roundtable of key stakeholders in the transit trade and transport industry.
