The Ministry of Fisheries and Aquaculture Development (MoFAD) has announced fishing closed season dates for this year, scheduling a one-month break for canoes and inshore vessels and two-months off fishing for industrial trawlers.
The 2024 closed fishing season for canoes and inshore vessels have been scheduled for July 1 to 31, whilst that for industrial trawlers have been set for July 1 to August 31, 2024, 2024.
According to the sector minister, Mavis Hawa Koomson, fishermen have been well-informed ahead of this year’s exercise.
To avoid disagreements with fisher-folks, she said that her outfit undertook extensive sensitization sessions in various fishing communities.
“We have expanded sensitization this year; we used to bring only a few executives, but this time, we added some other members [fishermen groups] so the education has gone deeper than it’s always been,” she told journalists.
